Quite a bit has changed but it’s not immediately obvious. Hit F1 to start a fight with some slimes. Esc exits the battle immediately, or you can just defeat the slimes.

The site is switched over. There are possibly some lingering errors but things look all right. Contrary to what I said earlier, the RSS feeds should redirect such that you don’t have to worry too much about changing your feed subscriptions.
This change happened because I finally decided that Drupal, which I was using before, was just too large and required me to worry about it too much. It also took up way more space than it needed to for what I was using it for.

So! I discovered while unnecessarily mucking around with my menu system in an effort to further procrastinate on building my battle system that colour filters were broken in Verge3. I decided that as my update, I’d fix whatever the problem was and post it up for the whole world to see.
So I got to work. After two weeks here’s what I’ve discovered:
The internal colour filter functions LOOKED like they were still working all right.

It’s been nearly a month; much too long. In that time I have been thinking about the battle system, rolling things around in my head trying to figure out how to lay things out. I’ve been trying very hard to figure out where the balance between interesting to play and easy to use falls. I’m somewhat stuck but am slowly working through it (and trying to apply my mantra of “do what’s easy and make it more complicated later if you have more time”).

Go to verge-rpg.com to read about Verge 3.2
This has actually been a few months in the coming, and Geas has had updated verge executables along the way; if you noticed the size of the .exe changing every few weeks it was because I was trying to keep up to date with the version in the SVN and doing testing with my code to see if things had broken (which was often!

New sprite added for Thea Wayman, Kiel’s mother. Also, various under-the-hood changes.
Discussion
I did some code reorganization this week. Nothing major, but some things flow a bit better.
Also on the coding front, I’ve added StringTable support to Geas. What this means is that (for now, only in the speechboxes, but I plan to expand this out to all gui display functions) I can define a language file that dictates a bunch of string replacements.

Tanessa’s overworld sprite is finished. I messed with the animations a bit (on both their sprites) and I think they look better now. That’s all that’s really new in the zip. Also in the last few days I have been writing a bit to myself about combat system stuff, and worrying out some details for upcoming stuff.

I’ve finished Kiel’s sprite, and done half of Tanessa’s. I am in the process of planning/mapping out the first dungeon area, which will probably also entail adding a battle system of sorts (which of course brings up stats, items, etc. etc. etc.) so assuming I actually get some time and energy to put towards Geas something should be happening in the next while.

This update adds new portraits for Kiel (which I don’t really like better but they are more consistent with Tanessa’s portrait), every house in Shoda’s Brook has an ‘inside’, and you can now leave town. Unfortunately, the overworld is still heavily in progress so you can’t get BACK in town.
Discussion
I’ve been sitting on some of this stuff since Christmas (for some reason) and some of it is more recent.

Sadly, just words again this week and not even as many. I need to get up early in the morning so I’ll have to keep this short.
The Verge engine is getting close to being ready for a release. Which is great! Unfortunately we’re now at the stage of a bunch of noodly bits like getting it compiled on multiple platforms and lame stuff like that. Foremost for me, I think, is fixing any bugs that crop up during testing, and to start working on a tutorial for using Verge with Lua.

Hi everyone.
I don’t have pretty pictures or a downloadable thing today, sorry. I don’t really have the time before I need to go sleep to get that stuff together, and I’d like to do some bug-hunting and graphics clean up before I release what I’ve got done. So I’ll talk about it instead. With bullet points.
On the Geas front, since the last actual update I have accomplished the following:

It’s been a while.
There is stuff happening with Geas, but not as much as I would like, as per usual. Just like last time I posted, things have been crazy busy but now they look like maybe they’re getting better. Just like last time. So we’ll see. Anyway, this post is not about Geas.
It’s about Hyacinth.
Hyacinth is an in-your-browser, old-school styled rogue-like. More-or-less. It has a much less punishing interface, and has some severe balancing issues.

So here’s a story. If you’ve been following my twitter feed you will have heard snippets of this, but I wanted to post SOMETHING here because it’s been a month and a half when I expected to be gone for a couple of days.
Last November/December (don’t remember the exact date) we decided/discovered that we needed to move out of our previous place. The story behind that isn’t terribly long or complex but it’s irrelevant to this particular story; suffice it to say that the reasons were more happy than upsetting and it wasn’t a huge deal.

I actually have stuff to talk about in Geas but I’ve been too busy with life, work, and other things (see below) to get a post together. I’ll try for later this week.

I also hooked up insides for all of the other “generic small houses” in Shoda’s brook. Unfortunately I only had time to spruce up a couple of them; the rest are fully functional in terms of getting in and out but are just empty rooms.
Discussion I think I’m about done with the chair jokes.

Let’s get this out of the way first: The comic is terrible. Even if you’re my mom you don’t have to like it. It sprang from me having an idea for a very short stupid joke (see the first comic on the page there) and sketching it out in Paint.

Lua is a scripting language. It is one of the options for scripting in Verge, and is also a language that I’m using in another project that I’ll be working on in the next while. It’s fast and easy to embed into other applications. It’s also powerful and svelte, thanks to some neat language tricks and the way it is built.
One issue with Lua, though, is that it lacks some pretty core Object Oriented concepts.

So I’m back on the bandwagon, for now. It’s been a long while, and here I am at a different place on the Internet. Not only that, but I’ve come up against a realisation. Geas, as it stood before, was impossible for me to complete. Unless I came up with money and hired a game studio to complete the thing, it would never see the light of day. So I’ve been hard at work over the last week or so, tearing it apart and putting it back together.

To celebrate the reopening and rechristening of my personal website, I’ve decided to talk about the project that is going to dominate the site, at least at first. Geas is an RPG video game, in the style of Chrono Trigger or one of the 2d Final Fantasy games.
In June of 2004, Geas was begun as a follow up to my moderately successful VERGE competition game, Journey to Black Mountain. It was to made in two weeks, and would be grand and pretty and all those wonderful things.
